Conducts interviews to determine initial and ongoing eligibility for TANF (Temp. Assistance for Needy Families) including OWF, Medicaid, PRC and Food Stamps . At least 20% of time is spent on initial case work, excluding PRC). Reviews all documentation submitted to support information reported; computes budgets; approves/ denies applications based on established regulations both manually and via computer system. Explains recipients' rights and responsibilities, agency procedures and available programs and services. Makes referrals to other departments as needed (i.e. Social Services, Workforce Development, etc.). Reviews employment history, determines barriers, and prepares employability plan.
Prepares and maintains case records relative to client status. Includes all case activity (reported changes, resources and income). Processes necessary changes, prepares notification letters/forms informing recipient of all actions taken. Keeps up-to-date case notes in file. Makes referrals to investigative unit relative to suspected program violations, overpayments, and lost/stolen warrants. Assists with hearing summaries and appears in hearings when required. Responds to inquiries from the public either by telephone or written correspondence or in person. Utilizes technology available within unit to manage cases according to established methods.
Completes necessary forms, reports, correspondence, etc. Requests information from other agencies/departments when client is otherwise unable to do so. Performs tasks both manually and via computer system.
Attends training sessions, workshops, and seminars to remain current with changing rules and laws and to enhance job performance. Completes other tasks when assigned by supervisor and/or Director.
Job Requirements:
One year of experience as an Eligibility/Referral Specialist 1; or
Two years experience as Unit Support Worker 2; or
Completion of undergraduate major core coursework in behavioral science, social science or education; once course or six months experience in interviewing techniques, and one course or six months experience in typing, keyboarding, or word processing; or
Two courses or one year of experience in behavioral science, social science, or customer service techniques, one course or six months experience in business English, one course or six months experience in interviewing techniques, and one course or six months experience in typing, keyboarding or word processing.
